A few weeks ago a company we're working with found out their data was sitting on a dark web forum. They found out because somebody posted about it on LinkedIn and a colleague happened to see it.
Their IT manager did a genuinely good job with what he had. Found a second article, pulled a screenshot off a dark web monitoring tool, narrowed down which system it probably came from and roughly when. Then he wrote, in an email, that nobody on their side had experience in this area.
He got to us because someone knew someone. That's how most of this still works. You ask around, you get four names, you pick one for a reason you'd struggle to defend.
So if you do incident response, this is who's on the other end. A competent person at eleven at night reading a forum post about his own company's data.
A COO told me last month he doesn't care whether a company or an individual does the work, as long as he can verify the person is credible. That's what we vet for!
That's Heelr. If you're the person on the other end of that call, come and be listed.
