🤖 AI + Cybersecurity: Are Cyber Attacks About to Become Far More Advanced?

The more I learn about cybersecurity, the more obvious it becomes that AI is going to fundamentally change the cyber threat landscape.

But there are two sides to this.

đź”´ AI for attackers

AI could potentially make attacks:

• Faster

• More automated

• More personalised

• More difficult to detect

Think about AI-assisted reconnaissance, highly convincing phishing, deepfakes, vulnerability discovery and automated attack techniques.

The biggest concern isn’t necessarily that AI will suddenly create completely autonomous cyber attacks.

It’s the speed and scale at which existing techniques could potentially be carried out.

🔵 AI for defenders

The same technology can also strengthen cybersecurity.

AI can help security teams analyse huge volumes of data, identify unusual behaviour, correlate security events, prioritise alerts and assist with incident response.

Imagine a SOC receiving thousands of alerts.

Instead of an analyst having to investigate every individual event, AI could help identify relationships between them:

Unusual login → unusual device → suspicious process → abnormal network activity

Five separate events could potentially become one identifiable security incident.

⚔️ AI vs AI

This is where I think cybersecurity gets particularly interesting.

The future may not simply be:

Humans vs AI

It could increasingly become:

AI-assisted attackers vs AI-assisted defenders.

Attackers will use AI to discover weaknesses.

Defenders will use AI to detect them.

Attackers will adapt.

Defenders will adapt.

And the cycle will continue.

For those of us entering cybersecurity, this makes understanding AI increasingly important.

I’m currently working towards my CompTIA Security+ certification, and I’m particularly interested in the SOC side of cybersecurity and how technologies such as SIEM, threat intelligence, detection and AI are changing the role of security professionals.

Cybersecurity isn’t just about protecting systems from the threats we know about today.

It’s about preparing for the threats that are coming next.

AI isn’t just going to change cybersecurity.

It may change the speed, scale and sophistication of the entire cyber arms race.

And we’re only at the beginning.

Schomer: This infographic lays out the balance well, but it highlights a massive asymmetry in modern AppSec.Most defensive AI tools focus heavily on downstream mechanics like Log Analysis & Correlation or post-event Threat Intelligence. In practice, that means we are using faster automation just to write more detailed post-mortem reports after a boundary has already been breached.Meanwhile, an AI-assisted
