AI is changing the SOC analyst role, here's what entry-level talent needs to know.

A lot of people in cybersecurity are worried. And honestly? The concern isn't unfounded.

AI is already handling the repetitive Tier 1 work (alert triage, anomaly detection, automated containment and more). Tools like SIEM platforms and SOAR are doing in seconds what used to take analysts hours.

But here's what I've come to understand: AI is replacing the routine, not the reasoning.

The analysts who will thrive aren't the ones who just respond to alerts. They're the ones who understand why attacks happen, can think like an adversary, and know how to work with AI tooling rather than compete against it.

If you're early in your career, here's what I'd focus on:

* Get hands-on with SIEM tools (Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel)

* Learn the MITRE ATT&CK framework, understand attacker methodology

* Pick up Python or PowerShell for automation

* Develop strong communication skills, AI can't brief a non-technical stakeholder

* Specialize early (cloud security, threat intel, OT/ICS are still thin on AI coverage)

The entry-level landscape is shifting, but it hasn't closed. It's just raising the bar.

What do you think, is AI a threat or an opportunity for SOC analysts?

Laurent H.: I was just talking about this last week, to me it’s both, but mostly an opportunity if you play it right. I believe that low level roles might shrink. But at the same time, it makes good analysts way more powerful. Very good advice Innocent O. Akpareva

Innocent A.: Laurent Halimi you're right, another thing that needs to be reviewed is the teaching curriculum for entry-level SOC Analysts but that's a discussion for another day.

Ugochukwu I.: Well, Ai cannot be underestimated because of it's huge impact in the tech space, but that not withstanding, The entry-level SOC role is getting more better and interesting because of this Ai tools like Splunk-based SSH brute-force detection and investigation makes it easier and helps a lot in the learning process.
