🛡️ I Set a Trap for Hackers. Here's What Happened in 24 Hours
When I deployed a T-Pot honeypot on Vultr cloud infrastructure, I expected some activity. What I didn't expect was:
🚨 90,000+ attack attempts in 24 hours
⚡ 8,000+ attacks per hour
🌍 40+ countries scanning my system
🔓 500+ attempts using "123456" as a password
🎯 What Attackers Were Targeting
Most Targeted Services
SSH (Port 22) – 45% of all attacks
SMB (Port 445) – 18% of attacks
SIP (Port 5060) – 13% of attacks
Top Attacking Countries
1. 🇿🇦 South Africa (35%)
2. 🇺🇸 United States (25%)
3. 🇫🇷 France (15%)
Common Credentials Attempted
Usernames: root, admin, administrator
Passwords: 123456, password, admin
🛠️ Technologies Used
Cloud: Vultr (Atlanta, US)
OS: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Honeypot: T-Pot (Dionaea, Cowrie, Suricata)
Visualization: Elastic Stack (Kibana)
💡 Key Lessons Learned
1. The internet is constantly scanned – systems are targeted within minutes
2. Attackers automate everything – 90%+ of attacks are scripted
3. Weak credentials remain the top risk – "123456" and "admin" still work
4. Threat intelligence is actionable – understanding attack patterns helps prioritize defenses
