Edge appliances remain the front door.
SonicWall confirmed active wild exploitation of two new SMA 1000 flaws today: CVE-2026-83548 (pre-auth SSRF, CVSS 10.0) and CVE-2026-83549 (command injection, CVSS 7.8). Chained together, they allow unauthenticated remote code execution.
• Impacted: Models 6210, 7210, and 8200v.
• Patches: Hotfixes 12.4.3-03526 / 12.5.0-02952 or higher.
• Out of Scope: SSL-VPN on firewalls and SMA 100 series appliances.
If your organization exposes an SMA 1000 to the internet, treat this as an incident response trigger, not a standard patch ticket:
• Verify Infrastructure: Confirm device model and active build immediately. Assume exposure if unpatched.
• Deploy Immediately: Apply firmware updates before negotiating internal change windows.
• Rotate Credentials: Reset admin and user passwords, clear active session databases, and rotate TOTP seeds.
• Audit Active Logs: Review VPN and identity access logs from the last 14 days. Look for anomalous administrative sessions or interaction with /wsproxy.
• Re-image Devices: Follow SonicWall's compromise guidelines explicitly if breach indicators are found. Do not "patch and hope" on an compromised perimeter broker.
This follows the exact pattern of the August SMA 1000 exploitation vector weaponized by INC Ransomware affiliates. The edge appliance is the beachhead, not the final objective.
