First things you should do when a link drops on your timeline đź‘€
It’s 2026. We really shouldn’t be clicking links anyhow.
Today, I received this link via WhatsApp from a colleague:
https://gvly.xyz/FG-Free-CAC-Registration-Portal
Instead of clicking it immediately, I applied a Zero Trust mindset: Never trust, always verify.
My quick investigation:
- VirusTotal — used to check the URL against multiple security vendors and threat-intelligence sources for signs of phishing, malware, or other malicious activity.
- Sandbox — used to safely examine suspicious files, links, or behaviour in an isolated environment without exposing my main system directly to potential threats..
- Threat intelligence — I also checked the domain's reputation and registration details. The results were concerning: multiple security providers have flagged gvly.xyz for phishing, and independent reputation services rate the domain as highly suspicious.
Bottom line: Treat this link as high risk and potentially phishing-related. Don't enter passwords, NIN/CAC details, OTPs, banking information, or other sensitive information into it. I'm sure you know what these personal identifiale information(PII) can be used for if it drops in the hands of threat actors(Hackers)
One important lesson:
A link coming from someone you know doesn't automatically make it safe.
Their account could have been compromised, or the message could have been forwarded without proper verification.
Before clicking:
Pause → Verify → Investigate → Then Decide.
Cybersecurity isn't always about sophisticated tools. Sometimes, the strongest security control is simply not clicking first
