FBI removes contractor after missed security patch exposed employee data
Thousands of bureau employees had sensitive personal information exposed in a data breach, and the FBI responded on Monday, Oct. 5, by removing a contractor tied to the incident. Cyber chief Brett Leatherman said the bureau's review so far points to a platform run by an outside organization, where a contractor "failed to implement a security patch" that had been explicitly issued to secure it. Leatherman added that all necessary steps have been taken to reduce further risk and protect the bureau's workforce.
Among the exposed material were detailed descriptions of the counterintelligence jobs held by named employees, together with street addresses of human intelligence operatives and medical and psychiatric records of bureau workers. Operational security took a severe hit, according to several former bureau officials, and the bureau is still working out the ramifications.

Walid N.: I keep wondering how people in high level jobs still miss such details and cause catastrophic outcomes like this. it is true that the human is cybersecurity weakest link.
