HOTEL NETWORK SEGMENTATION: SEPARATE SSIDs DO NOT GUARANTEE ISOLATION

A hotel may expose multiple network zones through the same physical infrastructure:

- Guest wireless

- Staff endpoints

- PMS and operational services

- POS and payment infrastructure

- CCTV and access control

- Network management interfaces

The security objective is not necessarily to put every system on separate hardware. It is to enforce appropriate trust boundaries and restrict unnecessary communication.

What should an authorized assessment validate?

1. Layer 2 isolation

Can guest clients communicate directly with other guest clients when that communication should be blocked?

2. Inter-VLAN access control

Do firewall or routing policies restrict traffic between guest, staff and critical network segments?

3. Management-plane exposure

Are administrative interfaces accessible only from approved management paths?

4. Critical-service reachability

Can guest-network devices reach internal services that should not be exposed to them?

5. Evidence and monitoring

Are configuration changes, denied connections and relevant security events logged where supported?

A different SSID is not proof of a security boundary. Effective isolation depends on the underlying VLAN, firewall, wireless-controller and access-control configuration.

Testing should be authorized, scoped and designed to avoid disrupting hotel operations.

Assessment question: can the hotel demonstrate, through configuration review and controlled validation, that guest devices cannot reach restricted internal resources?
