AI is getting better at finding vulnerabilities. That means “we'll fix security later” is becoming an increasingly expensive strategy.
For years, security teams have had to search through enormous codebases looking for weaknesses.
Now AI can help automate parts of that process.
Recent research and reporting show AI is increasingly being used to identify software vulnerabilities and help researchers validate potential exploits. The recent PHP crisis is a powerful example of how AI-assisted vulnerability discovery can trigger urgent remediation across widely deployed software.
That's a major shift for software engineering.
If AI can discover weaknesses faster, engineering teams need to become faster at fixing them.
That means security can't remain a final-stage activity:
Build → Deploy → Security Review → Fix
The better model is:
Design → Code → Test → Scan → Deploy → Monitor → Improve
Security needs to become part of the engineering feedback loop.
Developers should increasingly be able to catch:
→ Injection flaws
→ Broken authorization
→ Exposed secrets
→ Unsafe dependencies
→ Insecure APIs
→ Misconfigurations
→ Authentication weaknesses
before production.
And this is where I think the future of software engineering is heading:
Not developers versus security teams.
Not AI versus developers.
But:
Developers + AI + security engineering
working together to make software safer before attackers discover the weaknesses first.
The question isn't whether AI will change software security.
It already is.
The real question is:
Will your engineering process adapt at the same speed?
