Ben N. — Data Scientist

Hello everyone,

My name is Ben, and I’m new to both cybersecurity and this platform. I’m looking for a practical, beginner-friendly way to build foundational skills and choose certifications that can support an entry-level career path. I would appreciate the group’s advice on two questions:

1- For someone with limited cloud experience, which certification path is a better starting point: AWS or Microsoft Azure? I’m especially interested in which option is more beginner-friendly, offers accessible study materials, and provides a useful foundation for cybersecurity work.

2- Which cybersecurity certification would you recommend for an entry-level candidate on a limited budget? I know that CompTIA Security+ is widely recognized, but the exam cost is currently beyond my budget. I would be grateful for suggestions for lower-cost or free alternatives that still teach practical fundamentals and are respected by employers.

If you have experience with either certification path, please share what you would recommend. You can leave a comment or send me a direct message on this platform.

Thank you for your time.

Have a great weekend,

Ben N.

George B.: I’d probably go AWS. There’s a ton of free material around it and you can get started with the free tier/credits and actually mess around with things as you learn. For Security+, even if you don’t take the exam right now, the objectives are free and give you a pretty decent list of what to learn. TryHackMe / Hack The Box are good for getting some hands-on time in too. And since you’re already on C

Ben N.: George Botnaru, Thank you, George! I will look at your recommendation. I started with AWS free tier/credits. I will look at the courses at Cyberr Academy. I started to look at them after my post. I notice that they have discount for the courses as a premium members. I will look at TryHackMe/Hack the Box. Thank you for your recommendation once again.
