Cybersecurity is changing — and the attacker doesn't always need malware anymore.
One of the most important shifts in the current threat landscape is the move from “break in” to “log in.”
Attackers increasingly target:
→ Stolen credentials
→ Session tokens and cookies
→ MFA enrollment and authentication methods
→ Privileged identities
→ Cloud and SaaS accounts
→ Third-party/vendor access
→ Legitimate remote administration tools
Once valid access is obtained, the attacker may look like a legitimate user.
That's what makes identity-led attacks so dangerous.
And AI is accelerating the problem.
Attackers can automate reconnaissance, create convincing social-engineering content, scale phishing operations, and move faster than traditional security processes were designed to handle. Recent threat reporting also shows attackers increasingly abusing trusted infrastructure and legitimate tools to avoid detection.
So what should defenders be asking?
Not only:
> “Did someone breach the network?”
But:
> “Does this user's behavior still make sense?”
A login from a new device.
A sudden MFA change.
Unusual privilege escalation.
Mass downloads from SharePoint.
A service account accessing resources it has never touched before.
Individually, these events may look harmless.
Together, they can tell the story of an intrusion.
The future of detection isn't simply about collecting more alerts.
It's about understanding identity, behavior, context, and attack chains.
Security teams need to move from:
Authentication → Verification
Alerts → Context
Perimeter defense → Identity defense
Reactive response → Continuous detection
The attacker may have a valid password.
But valid credentials should never automatically mean valid behavior.
That's where modern threat detection needs to focus.
